Fresh from the good folks in Nashville, we’re proud to present this 2024 Gibson Custom ’63 Les Paul SG Custom VOS in Red Fox finish! This guitar is a modern reissue of one of the most iconic guitars in history. The original 1963 Les Paul SG Custom set a benchmark for performance, aesthetics, and playability, and this updated model continues that legacy with enhanced craftsmanship and vintage styling. The Les Paul SG Custom was first introduced in the early 1960s as a response to the changing musical landscape. Musicians were demanding guitars that provided better access to higher frets, lighter weight, and enhanced playability. After the original Les Paul was officially discontinued in 1960, Gibson introduced the “new Les Paul” model (without the knowledge or consent of Mr. Polfuss himself) in 1961. The new Les Paul design with its double-cutaway body and beveled edges met many players’ needs perfectly, but not so much the man for which it was named. Thus, Gibson removed “Les Paul” from the model in 1963 and renamed it the “SG” for “solid guitar”. But over time, the guitars became famous for their unique aesthetics and versatile sound, used by numerous legendary guitarists over the decades.

This 2024 Custom Shop version faithfully recreates the look and feel of the original ’63 model, featuring the classic double-cutaway body shape that provides unparalleled access to the upper frets. The Red Fox finish adds a strikingly elegant touch, setting it apart from the more common Polaris White finish. The VOS (Vintage Original Spec) treatment gives the guitar a lightly aged look, mimicking the gentle wear that would be seen on a well-maintained vintage instrument.

Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, the 2024 ’63 Les Paul SG Custom features premium tonewoods and construction techniques. The body is made from solid mahogany, renowned for its rich, warm tonal qualities and sustain. The neck is also mahogany, joined to the body with hot hide glue for superior resonance and stability.

The fingerboard is made from high-quality ebony with pearloid block inlays, which provides a smooth playing surface and contributes to the guitar’s rich and articulate sound. The 22 medium jumbo frets are precisely leveled and polished for effortless playability.

At the heart of the guitar’s sound are its custom-wound Gibson humbuckers. These Custombucker pickups are designed to capture the essence of the original PAF (Patent Applied For) pickups found in vintage 60’s models, delivering a powerful yet nuanced tone. The three-pickup configuration offers a wide range of tonal options, from thick, creamy leads to crisp, articulate rhythm sounds.

The control layout is classic Gibson: two volume knobs, two tone knobs, and a three-way toggle switch, allowing players to blend the pickups for a variety of tonal textures. The hardware is finished in lightly aged gold, complementing the vintage aesthetic. The ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic bridge and 60’s style Lyre vibrola tailpiece provide that striking look and appeal that these models are well known for.
