The Gibson ES-140 is a notable entry in the long list of Gibson “Electric Spanish” or “ES” guitars, distinguished by its unique design and historical significance. Launched in the early 1950s, the ES-140 was essentially a smaller, three-quarter-sized version of the iconic Gibson ES-175, making it an intriguing choice for musicians who desired a compact, easy-to-play instrument without compromising on quality.

The Gibson ES-140 features a single cutaway hollow body, which is a hallmark of Gibson’s electric archtops. Its body is made from laminated maple, a common material in archtop construction due to its tonal properties and resistance to cracking. The top is adorned with f-holes, which enhance its acoustic projection and give it a classic look. The neck is made from old-growth mahogany, paired with a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard that offers a smooth playing experience.

One of the most distinctive aspects of the ES-140 is its significantly smaller scale length. Measuring around 22.75 inches, the shorter scale length makes it easier to play, especially for younger musicians or those with smaller hands. This also gives the guitar a slightly different feel, with a bit less tension compared to full-sized models. The body of the ES-140 was standard depth, but was also offered as a “thinline” model (which ultimately replaced the standard ES-140 in 1956).

ES-140’s are equipped with a single P-90 pickup, known for their powerful, warm sound that bridges the gap between the clarity of single-coil pickups and the fullness of humbuckers. The P-90 provides a truly great tone, capable of producing sweet, mellow sounds for jazz and blues, as well as more aggressive, biting tones for rock and roll, though its important to note that fully hollow models will tend to feedback in higher gain applications.

The control layout is simple, featuring a single volume and a single tone knob. This straightforward setup allows players to easily dial in their desired sound without the complexity of multiple controls. The P-90’s position near the neck also contributes to the guitar’s warm, full-bodied sound, making it a favorite among jazz guitarists and even blues players.
