Introduced in 1961 by the Rickenbacker company of California, the 4001 was designed as an evolution of the earlier 4000 model. It was a response to the growing demand for electric bass guitars that could offer more tonal versatility and sustain. The 4001 featured a sleek, double-cutaway body design with neck-through construction, which was both visually striking and ergonomically sensible. Its body was typically made from maple, providing a bright and resonant tone that complemented its distinctive sound.
One of the most defining features of the Rickenbacker 4001 is its unique set of pickups. The bass was equipped with two proprietary single-coils, positioned in a way that allowed for a wide range of tonal options. These pickups were known for their clarity and articulation, producing a sound that could cut through the mix with ease and would become recognizable worldwide. The 4001 also had a distinctive “Ric-O-Sound” stereo output, allowing players to split the signal from the neck and bridge pickups for even more tonal flexibility.

In terms of playability, the Rickenbacker 4001 was praised for its fast and comfortable neck. The neck was typically made from maple and walnut, with a bubinga or rosewood fingerboard adorned with ‘shark tooth’ inlays. Its slim profile and smooth finish made it easy for players to navigate the fretboard, whether they were laying down a solid groove or taking a melodic solo.

Over the years, the Rickenbacker 4001 has been associated with some of the most influential bassists in rock history. One of the most notable players to wield a 4001 was Paul McCartney of The Beatles. His use of the bass on albums like “Rubber Soul” helped to popularize the instrument and showcase its unique sound to a global audience. Other legendary bassists who have favored the 4001 include Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead, Chris Squire of Yes, Geddy Lee of Rush, among many others.

Beyond its association with rock and roll royalty, the Rickenbacker 4001 has also been celebrated for its aesthetic appeal. Its eye-catching, curvaceous body and distinctive headstock have made it a favorite among musicians and collectors alike. The 4001 has been produced in a variety of finishes over the years, from classic Jetglo (black) and white, to more vibrant colors like Fireglo (sunburst), Mapleglo (natural) . Each finish adds its own unique character to the instrument, making it a true work of art.
Despite its popularity and acclaim, the Rickenbacker 4001 has not been without its quirks and challenges. Some players have noted that the instrument’s neck-heavy balance can make it feel a bit unbalanced when strapped on. Additionally, the 4001’s unique bridge design, as well as the “Ric-O-Sound” output, can take some time to get used to for those accustomed to more traditional basses. However, these minor drawbacks have done little to dampen the enthusiasm for the 4001 among its devoted fan base.
