A Guitar Or Bass!: Naturally this one deserves the top of the list, as its one of the best gifts anyone with a passion for playing can get! Getting a guitar or bass as a present often ignites a spark of inspiration and can serve as a lasting joyous memory for a lifetime. Plenty of us have childhood memories of receiving our first instrument during the holidays or for a birthday and those memories last forever.
Of course, it’s important to note that this is a rather big gift idea that does take a bit of prior knowledge to help make the right decision. So if you’ve not well versed in what might be suitable, visiting a guitar shop like IVG can be helpful, as we are experts and can help steer you in the right direction. Buying an instrument can be quite costly, but doesn’t always have to be! Guitars and basses come in all price points these days. So don’t let that holiday budget scare you out of considering an instrument for the aspiring maestros in your family.

Quality Strings: A guitarist can never have enough strings. Opt for a high-quality brand such as Ernie Ball, D’Addario or Martin, or even a variety pack if they have instruments with different tunings. You should find out whether their instrument(s) in question are electric or acoustic, as the two will require different strings.

Guitar Tuner: A digital tuner ensures their guitar stays perfectly in tune. Consider clip-on, pedal, or smartphone app tuners for convenience. There’s very few of us with the gift of “perfect pitch”, so having a tuner of any kind is an extremely helpful and necessary tool for musicians.
Capo: A capo helps change the guitar’s key without altering the fingering. Look for durable and easy-to-use models. If they don’t already have one, getting a capo for the first time will spark plenty of enjoyment experimenting with transposing their guitar to different keys.
Guitar Stand Or Wallmount: Keep their guitar safe and displayed elegantly with a sturdy stand or wall mount. Be aware that most wallmounts will require you to drill into your walls, so if that’s not ideal, consider going with the stand. For more seasoned musicians with several instruments, getting a multi-space guitar rack can be a great choice as well.

Effects Pedals: Guitar effects pedals allow for a range of sounds. Options include distortion, delay, reverb, wah, tremolo, flange, chorus, and many more. Research their preferred sound to find the perfect pedal. Or even look to their favorite musicians and a quick Google search will tell you what pedals they use, like this Dunlop Jimi Hendrix JHF1 Fuzz Face, for example.
Pedals can be an inexpensive fun way to give them something unique and fun to explore with. There’s an endless amount of effects available at all price points, and plenty of accessories to go along with them such as patch cables, pedal boards, and power supply units. For players with plenty of pedals already, take a peek at their board and see if there’s anything they might be missing. Guitarists usually have an affinity for one or more brands, so check out some of those companies’ other offerings for best results.
Straps: A stylish and comfortable strap can make long practice sessions more enjoyable. Consider personalized or padded straps for added comfort. Custom-embroidered or decorated straps are a great way of giving them something useful and unique.
Guitar Maintenance Kit: Help them keep their instrument in top condition with a kit including polish, fretboard conditioner, and cleaning tools. Learning how to use these things is essential in maintaining an instrument’s longevity and playability. For more advanced players, consider a toolkit or re-string kit for adjusting and setting up their instruments.

Guitar Case Or Gig Bag: A protective case or bag is essential for transporting their instrument safely. Look for one with extra padding or pockets for accessories. There’s plenty of quality cases out there of all shapes, sizes and colors.
Music Stand: A sturdy music stand helps guitarists read music or tabs comfortably while practicing.
Subscription To A Guitar Magazine Or Online Lessons: A subscription to a guitar magazine or an online lesson platform can provide ongoing inspiration and learning opportunities. There’s many offerings from seasoned pros and even celebrity musicians that can provide hours of explanation and knowledge to take their skills to the next level.
Books Or Sheet Music: Consider getting them sheet music for their favorite songs or instructional books to improve and expand their knowledge. While similar to lessons, these materials are good for those who want to go at their own pace, or maybe just learn a few songs from their favorite albums.
Portable Practice Amp: A compact amp allows them to practice wherever they go. Look for ones with headphone jacks for silent practice or onboard effects/features. Some practice amps need to be plugged into a wall outlet. In this case, a battery powered amp might be a better option for full portability.
Recording Gear: Consider a portable recorder or USB interface to help them capture their musical ideas. There’s plenty of devices on the market for this purpose, and many even have built in microphones for capturing voice and sounds of the outside world.

Picks: Guitarists can never have too many picks. Choose a variety pack or specialized picks for different playing styles. Like we mentioned with straps, picks can also be custom-ordered for a more personalized touch.
Gift Cards: If unsure about specific preferences, gift cards to music stores or online retailers give them the freedom to choose their ideal gear. We offer gift cards here at IVG, and with 4 shops across Southern California, there’s bound to be something for them in our inventory!
Concert Tickets Or Experience: Treat them to concert tickets of their favorite guitarist or a musical event, or gift them a guitar-related experience like a workshop or masterclass.
Online Subscriptions: Consider gifting them subscriptions to platforms hosting exclusive guitar content, lessons, or gear reviews.
DIY Guitar Kits: For the adventurous guitarist, a DIY guitar kit provides a unique experience to build their own instrument. This can be a fun way for players to familiarize themselves with the inner workings of guitar building with an end result they can actually play (hopefully!).

Guitar Themed Merchandise: T-shirts, mugs, posters, and other items featuring guitar-related designs or their favorite bands can be great gifts. Many of the major manufacturers offer accessories and merchandise in every category. We also have a few select piece of our own, like this IVG Lotería Card T-Shirt.
Honorable Mentions: If your person in question plays an instrument, there’s a strong chance that they also like music. Records, CD’s, T-shirts, and other music related merchandise are always great gift ideas to compliment the items mentioned above.
For musicians with many of their bases covered when it comes to gear, getting an upgraded version or replacement of one of their tools can make for an excellent gift. Perhaps they’ve mentioned having a shotty USB interface, or their favorite chorus pedal stopped working, or they just haven’t been able to pull the trigger on a better mixer, the holiday season is the perfect time to help them along their musical journey. Choosing a gift that aligns with their playing style, preferences, or any specific needs they have can make your gift truly special and appreciated. While there’s seemingly endless options to choose from when considering a gift for a guitar or bass player, we hope this list will help make the task a bit easier during this time of year.
